Art for the Gallery
Before the rise of personal exhbitions, art was previously reserved for the Church or artists would first have to become members of an Academy.
Artwork presented in these 19th Century old Masters Galleries adhered to very specific conditions: work hung at eye level were considered the most important, while anything
below or above it was seen of a lesser caliber. Today, galleries monopolised by wealthy owners and curators form the new 'Academy', deciding what is to be shown or not.
